Can Double Glazing Be Repaired

Can Double Glazing Be Repaired

The window company will probably tell you that you need new windows. That’s how they make their money. But in most cases, the answer to “can double glazing be repaired?” is yes, and the repair costs a fraction of what replacement would.

Here’s a straightforward guide to what can be fixed, what can’t, and how to tell the difference.

Most double glazing problems are repairable – Trusted advice by double glazing Edinburgh experts

A double glazed window is made up of several components that all age and wear at different rates. The sealed glass unit, the frame, the hinges, the handles, the locking mechanism, the rubber gaskets, and the weatherseals can all develop faults independently.

When one part fails, it doesn’t mean the whole window is finished.

In the majority of cases, the faulty component can be replaced or repaired without touching the rest of the window.

The trick is knowing which part has actually failed, because that determines whether you need a repair specialist or a full replacement.

Misted or blown sealed units

This is the most common double glazing repair we carry out. And it typically happens to older sealed units.

If you can see condensation, fogging, or a milky haze between the two panes of glass that you can’t wipe from either side, the sealed unit has failed.

The seal around the edge of the glass unit has broken down over time, letting moisture into the gap between the panes. Once the desiccant (the moisture-absorbing material inside the spacer bar) becomes saturated, the moisture has nowhere to go and condenses on the inner surfaces of the glass.

The fix is a sealed unit replacement. The old glass unit comes out of the existing frame and a brand new factory-sealed unit goes in. Fresh glass, fresh desiccant, a proper edge seal, and an argon gas fill for full thermal performance.

The frame, hinges, handles, and locks all stay exactly where they are. The job takes less than an hour per window, and the window looks and performs like new afterwards.

Blown Window vs Condensation

Cracked or broken glass

If one pane of your double glazed window has cracked or smashed, the whole sealed unit needs replacing, not just the damaged pane. You can’t separate the two panes and swap one out because the unit is manufactured as a single sealed assembly.

But you still don’t need a new window. The process is the same as replacing a misted unit. The broken sealed unit comes out, a new one goes in, and the frame stays put.

If the glass has smashed and there’s an immediate security concern, we treat these as urgent jobs and will prioritise getting the window made safe.

Handles, hinges, and locks

Stiff handles, handles that spin without engaging the lock, or handles that have snapped off are all repairable. Window and door handles are standard replacement parts, and fitting a new one takes minutes.

Hinges wear out over time, particularly on windows that get opened and closed frequently. A worn hinge can cause the sash (the opening part of the window) to drop, making the window difficult to close or creating a gap at the top where draughts get in.

Replacing the hinges lifts the sash back into its proper position and restores the seal.

Multi-point locking mechanisms on doors can also fail. The gearbox inside the lock strip may seize or the locking points may stop engaging with the frame keeps.

These mechanisms are replaceable without changing the door itself.

We carry a range of replacement handles, hinges, locks, and mechanisms for uPVC windows and doors. In most cases, we can match the existing part and fit the replacement on the same visit.

Draughty windows and worn gaskets

If you can feel cold air coming in around the edges of a closed window, the rubber gaskets or weatherseals around the glass or the frame have probably perished.

Rubber gaskets harden and shrink over time, particularly in Scotland where they’re exposed to cold temperatures, UV light, and constant moisture. Once they’ve pulled away from the glass or the frame, they stop doing their job and draughts get through.

Replacing gaskets is a straightforward repair.

The old gasket is pulled out and new gasket material is pressed into the same channel. It restores the airtight seal around the window and can make a noticeable difference to how warm the room feels.

Draught-proofing around the frame itself can also be resealed if the original silicone or mastic has cracked or come away.

Stiff or dropped windows

Windows that are hard to open, won’t stay open, or have dropped so they don’t sit square in the frame are usually a hinge problem.

The friction stays wear out over time and lose their ability to support the weight of the sash.

Replacing the friction stays is a simple repair that brings the window back to smooth operation.

If the window has dropped significantly, the new hinges will need adjusting to realign the sash with the frame, but this is all part of a standard repair visit.

Door mechanisms can stiffen up too. Patio door rollers wear out, sliding tracks get dirty or damaged, and multi-point locks can seize if they haven’t been lubricated. All of these are easily sorted by professionals.

What can’t be repaired

There are a few situations where the frame itself has reached the end of its life and repair isn’t a sensible option.

If a uPVC frame has gone brittle, cracked, or warped significantly, it can’t be straightened or patched. uPVC doesn’t rot, but after 25 to 30 years in exposed conditions, it can lose its structural integrity. At that point, the frame needs replacing.

Timber frames that have developed serious rot (particularly in the bottom rail or at the joints) may be beyond repair. Minor surface rot can sometimes be cut out and filled, but if the rot has penetrated deep into the timber, the frame is compromised.

If the frame is the problem, you do need new windows. But in our experience, this is the minority of cases. Most frames outlive the sealed units inside them by years.

Why defogging kits don’t work

You might have seen adverts for companies that offer to “defog” misted double glazing by drilling a small hole into the unit, injecting a drying agent, and resealing the hole.

The idea sounds appealing because it’s cheaper than a full sealed unit replacement. But it doesn’t actually restore the window to proper working order.

The original factory seal is already broken, and drilling into the unit creates another weak point. The argon gas that was insulating the gap is long gone and can’t be replaced through a drilled hole.

What you get is a temporarily clearer window with the same poor thermal performance as before. The misting usually returns within months because the seal is still compromised.

A proper sealed unit replacement solves every one of those problems in one go.

How sealed unit replacement works

A double glazing repair specialist removes the glazing beads (the strips of uPVC that hold the glass in the frame) and lifts out the old sealed unit.

A new sealed unit, measured and manufactured to fit the existing frame, is fitted in its place. The beads are refitted, and the window is back to full performance.

The new unit can be made to match whatever glass type the original had, whether that’s clear, obscure, toughened, or Low-E coated. It can also be upgraded to a higher specification if you want to improve the thermal or acoustic performance.

The whole process takes less than an hour per window. No scaffolding, no building work, no redecorating. The frame stays in the wall and everything around it stays untouched.

When full replacement is the better option

If the frames are structurally compromised (cracked, warped, rotted through), full window replacement makes sense. There’s no point putting new glass into a frame that’s falling apart.

If the windows are very old single-glazed units and you’re looking to upgrade to double glazing for the first time, that’s obviously a full replacement job.

And if you’re renovating a property and want to change the style, colour, or opening type of the windows, replacement is the way to go.

But if the frames are sound and the problem is misted glass, broken hardware, or worn seals, repair is almost always the smarter choice. It costs less, takes less time, and avoids the waste of manufacturing an entirely new window when only one component has failed.
